From theories to practice: Alex, what does “1”mean ?

Many authors have paid attention to the etiology of dyscalculia (here I use dyscalculia or math disability as equivalent terms, even is not very purist). In this post, we  address some of the most famous theories in this field and how we can link them to the real practice.
Almost everybody agrees with the two most famous theories in this area, which are actually an amazing work in numerical cognition. These theories propose that number troubles come from a weakness in number sense or numerosity coding.

Mental Number Line

  1. The Theory of the Approximate Number System (ANS), and how we use it for representing large and approximate numbers via a mental number line (Dehaene, 2011).
Is “8” big or small? – If we consider that a number lower than 5 is small.
    Is “6” big or small?
Probably it´s much easier for a kid to say that 10 is a big number, due to the “mental line distribution”
  2. The Numerosity- Coding Hypothesis proposed by Butterworth (2010), which states that Math Disability is caused by a deficit in the processing of smaller and exact sets of numbers.
These theories state that we all have a preverbal ability which contributes to the foundation for the Symbolic Number System that we use to learn mathematics.

Blue or Yellow? – In the easy task, the blue stars are much more salient but in the difficult task, a number of stars are quite similar, thus the RT increases.

Behavioral researchers struggling with statistics

«For the usual highly motivated researcher the non confirmation of a cherished hypothesis is actively painful. As a biological and psychological animal, the experimenter is subject to laws of learning which lead him inevitably to associate this pain with the contiguous stimuli and events. These stimuli are apt to be experimental process itself, more vividly and directly than the «true» source of frustration, i.e…, the inadequate theory» (Campbell & Standley, 1966, p.3)

«If one´s dissertation p is <.05 it means joy. In one´s p is >.05 it means ruin, despair. God loves the .06 nearly as much as the .05″ (Rosenthal, 1994, p.224)

«Studying is the principal means of self-education throughout life» (Rohwer,1984)

Sigue leyendo

The identity: WHO AM I…??

Imagen

Slettestrand, Denmark. November 2013

«You are the books you read, the films you watch, the music you listen to, the people you meet, the dreams you have, the conversations you engage in. You are what you take from these. You are the sound of the ocean, the breath of fresh air, the brightest light and the darkest corner. You are collective of every experience you have had in your life. You are every single second of every single day. So down yourself in a sea of knowledge and existence. Let the words run though your veins and let the colors fill your mind.»

Last days I took part in a project in Denmark, where I met people from different  countries and I had the opportunity to share “life” with them.  Off course,  I became involved in a multitude of ways, as a member of a group, as a human with social and emotional needs, aiming to integrate myself in a new group of people and even a new “improvised culture”. That was a real psychological experiment  itself -. multitude of behaviors  isolated and products from social interaction, personality traits, roles, stereotypes, personal goals… -. How could I explain it? Sigue leyendo

The culture´s role in the mental life

  • Recently I was pleased to be invited to participate in a training at «Danish United Nations Association» in Denmark. The subject of the lecture revolves around «the culture concept» and all phenomena related (as immigration, language develop, heritage of humanity, economy issues, learning programs, educational patterns, human rights and diversity). So, I just started to joint some ideas that I would like to speak about, and this (look below) is the result. Please, English is not my mother tongue, neither my second language… so I apologize beforehand for the expression flaws and others.

Today I would like to write about Culture,

In Spain, It is common to use the expression «to have culture or not» according to the level of education. Well… everybody has a culture.

It´s something inherent of humankind -. We are social animals.

It´s a fact that I am speaking and writing about culture so often. One reason is explained by my good feeling with «anthropology research» , however there´re lots of reasons why a psychologist can make references or reflexions about the «culture influence«. The culture is somehow a predictor of behaviour (between a multitude). There are lots of thrilling researches about the influence of the culture in a humankind, analyzing the human behaviour from different standpoints; as a member of a group, society, or individually. How important is the language acquisition, the broadcast of values, symbols or rituals? How important are the behaviour patters? What about religion? Sigue leyendo
