Cognitive Processing in Bilinguals: Serbian, English, Spanish & Italian

I met Lena two years ago in Tetovo, Macedonia (Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia); we spent 10 days together collaborating in “a fascinating project”. – Lena speaks perfectly four languages! Serbian, English, Spanish and Italian…

Macedonia- 2014

I remember her as a very good communicator, highly respected and trusted and with an extraordinary ability to build relationships. I was fascinated with her ability to speak Spanish; of course, she is bilingual in Serbian and English. I couldn´t believe during those 10 days that she´d taught herself Spanish (and today I discovered that she also speaks Italian). Speechless!

I enjoyed a lot reading Lena´s opinion; I found the perfect “polyglot example”. She told me once “you have to listen to a language as music

Today, she mentioned stories, drawings, songs, lyrics, her teacher´s personality, the constructive part of learning as a tool to rediscover oneself and how ditching perfectionism helps on the process.

It was inspiring to read her messages… giving feedback about what she understood, participating, asking questions for clarification and always listening what others want to say or express; I´m bringing back memories – Tetovo!

Each time my inbox gets these reminders; I am flooded with nice memories. It´s very exciting to see how people that one day you met, and with who you spent valuable time are doing great things with their lives. It doesn´t matter how many years have passed by, projects create and an amazing connection between people which is difficult to explain through words.

So, here´s Lena and how she learned four languages … Sigue leyendo

Turning passions into careers

Workshopping a Green-Day

Beans and the Holy Matter

It can result a bit childish spend time thinking how turning our great passions in exciting careers… but, did you experience how boring is that easy job? – I don´t agree with Confucius that time, when he wrote … chose a job that you like and you will never have to work again. – No, sorry… “You will never have to work a day in your life”. Pretty too much; this is a good moment to take your books, brushes, stovepipe hats, masks, drills, scalpels, guitars or whatever you need… and practice, practice, practice… – Do you want to be a good professional? I know, there´s a Romanche Touch here: 365 days in English

The national prominence

Well, if you define yourself as an amateur writer, you likely cannot understand why I am NOT using my native language. We know the beginner´s fears – Would you just read over my stuff and tell me if… I should make a small bonfire or just keep writing? Of course, we compare our writing with the best; we never think that all these “great works” have been rewritten and polished many times. Being in the early twenties, we all dreamed with that work which would catapult us to national prominence. But seriously, I am Spanish – Why expose myself to this macabre idea about writing in English? Everything happens for a reason [The Cliché]. Sigue leyendo

Lifelong Learning, Non Formal Learning: The New Educational Order

Lifelong Learning & the New Educational Order

Lifelong learning is a wonder drug which, on its own, will solve a wide range of educational, social and political ills” (British Educational Research Journal, 1999).

Lifelong learning is “all learning activity” undertaken throughout life, with the aim to provide knowledge, skills and competences. It means to acquire and update all kind of abilities, interests and knowledge that will enable each citizen to adapt to the “Knowledge Society” and participate in all spheres in life (Social – Economic – Cultural).
Lifelong learning means also a second chance, providing opportunities and tailoring the education to the needs (– Potential!) of the learner. Special efforts are needed in this context for different groups such as ethnic minorities, people with disabilities or people living in rural areas. Lifelong Learning is also about “learning culture”, to incentive the people who opt for learning and improve themselves.

Non formal education; a New Perspective Sigue leyendo
